David Park.
Six years tutoring A-level Maths and Further Maths in Oxford. Ex-secondary teacher. Currently working with around fifteen students per term.
I trained as a secondary maths teacher at the Institute of Education and taught at a London comprehensive for four years before moving back to Oxford in 2019. I tutor full-time. I take on around fifteen students per term — ten on weekly sessions, five on exam-prep packs.
My focus is A-level. Edexcel, OCR (including MEI), AQA. Further Maths too. Most of my students are in Year 12 or 13, working towards a specific grade or university place. I have a slightly smaller number of Year 11 students working through the higher-tier GCSE in advance of A-level.
How I work
Past papers and current topics. No filler. We work on the specific things that come up in the actual specification. Most sessions look like this: 20 minutes recapping the topic the student found hardest in school that week, 30 minutes on past-paper questions, 10 minutes on what to work on between now and the next session.
Results
Over the last six years I’ve worked with 60+ students through their A-level Maths exams. Of those, about 75% improved by a full grade or more between our starting point and the exam; the rest held steady. The number I’m proudest of is that no student I’ve worked with for a full year has dropped below a B at A-level.
Where I teach
In person, at my house in north Oxford (free parking, ten minutes from Summertown). Or by Zoom — the video sessions are just as effective, especially for students whose schedule is tight.
